10 most Instagrammable places in Venice

Venice - there’s no other place like it! Built on 180 islands and over 100.000 wooden piles. A city where there are no streets but there are canals. You won’t be able to drive there, instead you go by boat. You won’t find block of flats but palaces and architecture like nowhere else.

All of this makes Venice one of the most popular places in the world and record number of tourists visit it every year. How does one take photos on very busy streets and squares? And where are the best places? We invite you to read :)

1. St Mark’s Square

Probably the most popular place in all of Venice. There are plenty of photo ops here! All you need to do is find the right angle and frame your shot. We recommend you a photo with the cathedral, gondolas at the port and Doge’s Palace. However, there is 1 golden rule, which we reveal in point 1 of “Good to know” below ;)

2. Ponte Rialto

Or Rialto Bridge. The second most popular place in Venice. To find the best spot for a photo: go across the bridge from the San Marco district, to Oresi street. Here, immediately take the first right, walk around the building (Palazzo dei Camerlenghi). The spot is located on the Grand Canal side with a view of the Rialto Bridge. The other good spot is near the Rialto water tram stop (on the San Marco side).

3. View of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute

The spot is located next to the Santa Maria del Giglio gondola station and The Gritti Palace hotel. It’s best to get there by walking from St Mark’s Square.

4. Bridge of Sighs

If you want to have a photo with the bridge - the best spot is at Fondamenta della Canonica. You take the photo from the opposite bridge so in the picture the Bridge of Sighs is behind you. If you want a picture of the Bridge of Sighs only, go where all the tourists are - Ponte della Paglia.

5. Dock on the rio di San Moise canal

It is located on Piscina S. Moise, right next to the entrance to Saint Moise hotel. The easiest to get here is from the west side of St Mark’s Square. When you’re on Larga XXII Marzo street, turn right behind the pharmacy. It’s difficult to say what is the best time for photos here: there are deliveries in the morning and tired tourists occupy the spot in the afternoon. You have to be lucky to find the dock completely empty ;)

6. Grand Canal viewpoint

Located on the roof of the Tedeschi department store next to the Rialto Bridge. Only 75 people are admitted every 15 minutes so you have to book online or on site. We recommend going there early in the morning or for the sunset.

7. View of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute - front

The spot is located at the end of the narrow street Traghetto Vecchio by the water taxis dock. Walking down Marzo street from St Mark’s Square, take the second street left.

10. Gondola ride

Unmissable photo from Venice :) It’s worth taking a gondola ride and take a picture of yourself while floating down the canals. The official price is 80 EUR for a 40-minute ride.

Good to know

1. There are always crowds in Venice, so the golden rule is: take photos early in the morning, at sunrise. Only then on St Mark’s Square there’s just a few people and less popular spots are empty.

1. Sitting, e.g. on the stairs and eating in a public place (such as St Mark’s Square) is prohibited and you may be fined (up to 500 EUR, according to article 23. of the City Police Regulation).

1. Do not feed the pigeons on St Mark’s Square! This is strictly prohibited and punishable with a fine (up to 500 EUR, according to article 24. of the Municipal regulation regarding urban sanitation, veterinary and the well-being of animals).

1. If your budget allows you - look for accommodation in the city center. Visiting Venice in the early morning is a truly unforgettable experience. Spending the night outside the center or on the mainland will make it difficult for you to reach the center very early in the morning. It’s worth investing in beautiful memories :)
